Welcome Padel Players – to the Canadian Nationals Recap!!!
A forecast for only rain on Friday and Saturday provided a major challenge for drawmaster Craig Hiddleston. Five men and one woman travelled from Kelowna, British Columbia to Calgary for the weekend expecting to play padel against their rivals and take their games to the next level.
The rain made scheduling difficult. Craig was on it, however, and calmly provided updates approximately four times during the Friday/Saturday downpour and drizzle. A few matches started but were not completed until early Sunday morning when the sun began to shine for the majority of the day. Finally, the tournament commenced at 8:00 a.m. and continued until 4:00 p.m. just in time for another downpour!
Players of all levels fed into a main draw and then filtered to a feed-in consolation when defeated.
Craig Lamb and Matt Barnfather defeated Adrian Ballesteros and Clyde Dickey
Craig Hiddleston and Jeff Spiers defeated Chris and Mike Thorburn
Third Place was awarded to Ballesteros and Dickey.
Unfortunately, Chris had to return to Kelowna and was unable to play the ¾ playoff match with brother, Mike of Calgary.
Final: Lamb/Barnfather vs. Hiddleston/Spiers to be played the weekend of September 20-22 (time yet to be determined)
CONSOLATION DRAW AND PHOTOS TO BE POSTED SOON
A featured match that mixed quality play with good entertainment saw Women’s Open players Nancy Malone and Anna Pentland face off against Chris and Mike Thorburn in the quarterfinals, 6/3 6/3 for the boys.
Despite the weather constraints, our fellow padel friends left for home in BC pleased that they had developed their games at least one notch further. Mission accomplished!
Due to time restrictions it was decided that the Women’s Open Tournament would be played during the weekend of September 13-15 (times yet to be determined).
